KP Assembly Resolves to Honor Promises to Merged Tribal Districts

Peshawar: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the federal government and other provinces to fulfill the financial commitments made during the merger of the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018.

The resolution, moved by Ajmal Khan, a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from Bajaur, called for the release of funds pledged for the development of the merged districts. All members of the provincial assembly expressed their support for the resolution.

In 2018, during the historic merger of FATA with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the merger committee, with the approval of the federal government, promised the people of the tribal districts an annual allocation of PKR 100 billion for development projects over the next ten years. Additionally, the establishment of a judiciary and police system in the region was pledged to ensure the integration of these districts with the rest of the province.

However, despite these commitments and the PTI's government at both the federal and provincial levels, these promises remained unfulfilled. No substantial progress was made in implementing a judicial and policing system, nor were the promised funds provided for developmental initiatives in the tribal districts.

The lack of administrative and development work has left the merged districts in a state of neglect, and the absence of a functioning police and judiciary system has created a vacuum. Consequently, these areas have once again become vulnerable to the resurgence of militant activities.

The resolution emphasized the need to address the grievances of the people of the merged districts, urging the federal government and other provinces to provide the committed funds and take effective measures to ensure the region's progress and stability.
